Chapter 16

Calvin

“Let me get this straight,” Blaze starts, crossing his arms over his chest as he leans against the door frame. “You are leaving me in charge of everything until you and Raelynn get back from where?” His tone is incredulous. This might be the first time I have ever asked him to oversee anything in well forever. When we were boys, I always went to Kingston for help since he’s the second oldest. Hell, I pretty much raised Blaze myself since Dad was too drunk for anything.

“Yeah, that about sums it up.” I stuff some more clothes into the suitcase and blow out a breath as I rack my mind for anything I could be missing. “If anyone strange comes around, then let me know. Would not put it past him to come sniffing around again. And under no circumstances do you give anything away to Mrs. Fitzgerald.” That old woman, bless her heart, cannot be trusted. I mean, on one hand I get she means well and all, trying to do the right thing for her family, but damn, does she need to stick her nose in someone else’s business?

“I happen to like my time,” he quips. “Where are you going?”

“Somewhere not here.” I zip the suitcase close. It will do for now. There is no game plan other than going for a vacation while things die down. Haven’t taken one in years now that I think about it. Kind of hard to when there are animals depending on me and no one else for me to call on for help.

“And you trust me to stay and keep things up and running?”

“Yes or no.” I round on him, nostrils flaring, and mood souring faster than spilled milk. First, he complains I do not give him any responsibility and now he’s complaining because I’m asking him to take care of things in my absence? This is why I cannot stand my family sometimes. All the time. Whatever.

Blaze throws his hands up in mock surrender. “Just checking. Jeez, who got your balls in a twist?”

I will not fall for his piss poor attempts to start a fight. Instead, I clasp my hand on his shoulder and squeeze. “Thank you. Seriously.” Blaze splutters and huffs. The tips of his ears are tinged red. “We won’t be gone long. A week or two.” Honestly, there is no real destination in mind. Just need to put some distance between the farm and him.

“Still don’t understand why you are going this far for her when you guys aren’t even a thing.” Blaze squints at me. His eyes pierce through the facade and I can tell when the recognition hits him because his mouth pops open in disbelief. “Holy shit. You?”

“Watch the farm.” I grab my suitcase and meet Raelynn at the front door. She wrings her hands as Nina lectures her. Owen yawns and watches with indifference on his face. “Ready?” I call out, putting a stop to the lecture. A flash of relief crosses Raelynn’s face as she bends down to grab her bags.
